TEDxBerlinSalon "Leading in a Complex World"

The theme of the TEDxBerlinSalon is “Leading in a complex world”. The 21st century brings about a number of trends that make leadership an increasingly difficult task: The digital revolution fundamentally changes markets and products but also the way we communicate. Globalization and interconnectedness add to the information overload leaders experience everyday. A new cohort of employees, the generation Y, is claiming a deeper meaning, work-life balance and space to creatively express themselves. Against this backdrop, the leadership mantra of the 80s and 90s seems horribly out of place. A new paradigm of leadership for the 21st century is needed. But what are the ingredients of a new leadership model?

TEDxBerlinSalon "Breaking Ground" @ Markthalle Neun

In cooperation with the Stadt Land Food festival and Markthalle Neun, we orgnized a TEDxBerlinSalon to explore good foods and sustainable agriculture. We wanted to shine light on the incredible potential of the Berlin-Brandenburg region, but also gain insights on international perspectives on the topic of food. The conference was entitled "BREAKING GROUND“.

Is our region in upheaval? How has the everyday life of the (ecological) food production changed? What are the upsides of close cooperation of compacted metropolitan cities with depopulating rural areas? What meaning does food have in todays society? We want to explore where and how we can positively influence the development and consciousness we have towards food and nature and how to preserve it.

The ticket for this TEDxBerlinSalon included a  classic Markthalle Neun Dinner, which was served  after the conference (from 6 pm onwards) and based on the best local produces.

TEDxBerlin 2015 | TEDxBerlin "xponential change"

Commonly, exponential growth means explosive growth, it means that things increase in an uncontrolled way. This intuitive understanding comes from examples we know from biology: Bacteria exhibit exponential growth under optimal conditions. As a consequence the term „exponential“ often has a disquieting connotation.

When it comes to the significance of exponential growth for human activities we need to talk about accelerating technological change. In the technological arena accelerating change means an increase in technological (and often also social and cultural) progress throughout history, which may suggest a faster and more profound change in the future. 10.000 years of progress - at today’s pace - will now be experienced in just 50 years due to the exponential rate of change.

Futurists like Ray Kurzweil have created the notion of a technological singularity and a scenario for the future: Accelerating change will lead to artificial intelligence that exceeds human intelligence. By 2015, a $1000 computer will have the same calculation power per second as the brain of a mouse. 2023 will see it equal to the power of human brain. In 2045 it will be equate to the power of ALL human brains combined. Similar exponential developments await us in the areas of robotics, nanotechnology or synthetic biology.

At TEDxBerlin "xponential change" we wanted to explore where and how exponential change happens and what it will lead to. Which future will exponential change create for us? What are the implications these advances will have on society? What is the future role of humans in this brave new world? Is there a limit for exponential growth?

TEDxBerlinLive | TED2015 Truth and Dare

TEDxBerlinLive @ BASE_camp - A livestream from the TED2015 conference “Truth and Dare"

We streamed live from the TED2015 conference in Vancouver. This year’s TED conference theme was “Truth and Dare", which we dare to think was, in truth, the most provocative, invigorating, mind-shifting TED yet.

We showed two sessions from the event with talks from exciting speakers, such as researcher Rajiv Maheswaran whose work is transforming sports through technology, and planetary explorer Nathalie Cabrol who helps design interplanetary experiments for the Martian Spirit rover.

Drinks and snacks were kindly provided by our partner BASE_camp - thank you very much!

TEDxBerlinSalon "Chances. Challenges. Changes. Development 2015 and Beyond."

TEDxBerlinSalon "Chances. Challenges. Changes. Development 2015 and Beyond." | January 15th, 2015

2015 is a special year for development. For governments, development organizations and citizens all over the world it is an unparalleled opportunity to show their commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide and to inspire more people to get engaged and involved in development. 2015 is also the year in which the Millennium Development Goals that the world agreed to reach in 2000 are reviewed and in which new targets are set. It is the year in which the international community will agree on the future global framework for sustainable development and in which a new climate agreement will be drawn up. In short, 2015 is both a new beginning and a deadline.

This TEDxBerlinSalon was dedicated to the Year for Development. With this event, we wanted to address the big issues that should be tackled during 2015-2030 from a national and international perspective: global health, fight against poverty, good governance and the rise of Africa as the continent of the future. Our speakers shared their views on these issues with our TEDxBerlinSalon audience.
